If purchased within 5 weeks of your first winter freeze, keep the cuttings indoors in a glass of water near a window and plant them in a pot after the roots grow. Transplant them in the spring. The fall cuttings may appear scrubby, but they will be healthy.

This is a drought-tolerant succulent with beautiful, fleshy leaves that will bloom a dusty rose cluster of flowers. It can be grown as a houseplant in containers and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9. Plant it in full sun, although for higher zones, it can do well in partial sun and even full shade.

As a gardener in zone 7b, I don't have a lot of experience with this plant, but I've found it to be very easy to get it to flourish once I started experimenting with it. I discovered it growing under a holly bush in full shade, and it was doing quite well. Since it wasn't getting much attention, I pulled it up, divided it, and planted a row of the cuttings in sandy soil where they would get full or partial sun. After a year, some of them bloomed, and I was able to divide them again to create more plants. The plant doesn't seem to need much in the way of roots to get going.

One of the things I really like about this plant is that even when it's not in bloom, the foliage is gorgeous. It has a gray-green color that looks really nice against a darker mulch. The plant requires a little bit of water to start, but once it's established, its water needs are low, as I found it thriving under a bush that I never water.

When you receive the plants, they may be small, with or without roots. Plant them as soon as possible and water them well. This is a very hardy, medium-growing, deer-resistant plant that's easy to grow in just about any situation. It blooms in the fall, a few seasons into maturity.

The cuttings will be carefully and thoughtfully packaged, and planting instructions and fertilizer will be included.
